Introduction: Facilitating SER National STEM Day
I recently had the incredible opportunity to participate in SER National STEM Day as a facilitator. This event brought together passionate individuals dedicated to promoting STEM education within our community. As a first-generation Latina and a former engineer, being part of this initiative was both inspiring and rewarding. I’m excited to share this experience with you and highlight the impact of advocating for STEM education.
Just Two Latinos Advocating for STEM Education
During the event, I had the privilege of hearing José Hernández’s journey. His story is a testament to the power of perseverance. Growing up as a farmworker commuting between Mexico and the U.S., José dreamed of space exploration. Despite facing rejections, he applied to NASA eleven times, each attempt strengthening his resume—from earning a pilot’s license and scuba certification to learning Russian. Hearing his journey was truly motivational.
Although I may no longer be practicing engineering, I wouldn’t trade my educational journey for the world. The skills we acquire through STEM education extend beyond technical knowledge; they empower us to think critically, solve problems, and open doors to socioeconomic advancement. José’s story reminded me of the importance of resilience and determination in the pursuit of our dreams.

A heartfelt thank you to SER National for the opportunity to host SER STEM Day. It’s experiences like these that remind us why we push the boundaries of what’s possible. Being surrounded by like-minded individuals who are committed to fostering a love for STEM in young minds was truly inspiring. I am proud to be part of a community that values education and strives to create opportunities for future generations.
